DeSean Jackson Scouting Report

Positives
Running is what Jackson does, and speed has always been his game. He’s an elite sprinter who effortlessly runs by defenders. Even if he’s lost a half a step, he’s still a step ahead of anyone who has to backpedal, flip their hips and run with him. Stretches the field and track the deep ball well over his shoulder. Also a twitchy, change-of-direction runner. Better route runner than given credit for. Excels running away from man coverage.

Negatives
He’s a 30 year old whose game relies on the first physical attribute that fades: speed. Jackson has kept his speed to this point, but he’s an undersized, one-trick pony who teams may be wary of giving a long-term deal. Boom or bust production. If he loses his lone competitive advantage, what value can be provide a team?

DeSean Jackson Player Comparables

Contract Comparison

DeSean Jackson contract chart

The 2017 cap-adjusted average per years falls at $10.49 million. Marshall is the closest in both age and per game production to Jackson (2017 APY: $12.6M), and that range is where he would like the negotiations commence. Although there other contracts that could be considered here, one can see why Jackson is aiming for the $10-12 million range.

DeSean Jackson Leverage

Surely Jackson will argue that he’s far more a WR1-B than he is a WR2, and there may be a team who covets him as such. It’s hard to fathom that a speed receiver would get a bigger deal at 30 than he did at 27, but that’s reportedly what he’s looking for.

It’s hard to believe, but with the salary cap growth and limited options in free agency—the other top options are a receiver who’s missed 11 games in the last two seasons due to injuries and suspensions and a former quarterback who’s played the position for all of one season—it’s a possibility that he hits those numbers.

Tavon Austin has never reached that production, but his contract has to equate to the Rams paying for potential. Brandon Marshall has been one of the best receivers in the NFL during his career, and he signed his 2014 extension with the Chicago Bears at age 29. Jones was the only unrestricted free agent.

DeSean Jackson Reservation Price

Jackson could receive more than the three-year, $24-million deal he signed in 2014 on the heels of his best NFL season. Jackson still has the recent production with three 1,000-yard seasons in his last four years. Jackson should be fine with matching the $8 million annual salary he got in 2014.

Projection: 4 years, $38,000,000; $9.5M AVG, $26.25M GTD, $18M FG
